Trivia Question❓

In what year did Sunny Isles Beach, Florida officially change its name from Sunny Isles to Sunny Isles Beach?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

The Florida Department of Transportation has ordered Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale to remove their rainbow crosswalks due to safety concerns, threatening to withhold state and federal transportation funding.

City officials argue that the crosswalks are symbols of inclusivity and tolerance rather than safety risks.

The state's reasoning is based on a ban on pavement art with social or ideological messages that do not serve a traffic control purpose.

Fort Lauderdale's mayor believes the order is an attempt to erase visibility of the LGBT community.

Similar actions have been taken in Orlando, where neighbors restored the rainbow crosswalk outside a nightclub after it was painted over by FDOT.

A fire erupted Monday afternoon at the Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort in Sunny Isles Beach, drawing swift action from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The blaze began just after 2 p.m. at the Collins Avenue high-rise, with smoke and flames pouring from an outside garbage chute.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the chute area, while searching every floor and ventilating the building.

A smoldering mattress was found and handled on the sixth floor, but no injuries occurred.

Evacuations were carried out as a precaution, and the fire's cause is still under investigation.

The incident highlights the ongoing need for residents and visitors to stay familiar with evacuation plans and fire safety measures.

Following recent local fires, Sunny Isles Beach and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are ramping up community education programs to boost fire prevention and readiness.

The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has launched Florida’s first fully operational Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, dramatically enhancing local emergency response.

Partnering with leading drone technology firms, the department now deploys Skydio X10 drones — advanced, American-made aircraft — from docking stations across the city.

These drones respond to emergencies within about two minutes, regardless of weather or time.

Equipped with thermal and infrared imaging, they assist in searches for missing persons, track suspects, support medical emergencies, and monitor crowds or traffic.

Launching in just 20 seconds, the Skydio X10 streams live aerial video to officers’ devices, even beyond the line of sight, thanks to FAA-authorized autonomy.

A dedicated Drone Unit, staffed by FAA-certified officers, ensures responsible and safe operation.

This bold move positions Sunny Isles Beach as a leader in public safety innovation for its diverse community of over 22,000.
