Sunny Isles Beach Police Department Launches Pioneering Drone as First Responder Program |
Innovative technology enhances emergency response and public safety in the community |
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, becoming the first law enforcement agency in Florida to implement a fully operational Drone as First Responder (DFR) program.
In collaboration with industry leaders in autonomous drone and public safety technology, this program aims to revolutionize emergency response and situational awareness.
Central to this initiative are the Skydio X10 drones, American-made and compliant with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
These drones are strategically stationed in charging and deployment hubs, known as "Docks," enabling rapid response to incidents within approximately two minutes, regardless of time or weather conditions.
The drones are equipped to handle various critical scenarios, including:
Searching for missing persons
Locating fleeing suspects and stolen vehicles
Monitoring large crowds and traffic
Assisting in medical emergency response
Unlike traditional drone systems, the Skydio X10 can launch within 20 seconds and reach speeds up to 45 miles per hour.
They provide live aerial footage directly to officers' devices, even beyond the line of sight, thanks to advanced autonomy and authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Equipped with thermal and infrared imaging, these drones are effective in low visibility and nighttime operations.
The department has established a dedicated Drone Unit, comprising officers who have obtained FAA Part 107 remote pilot certifications.
This unit ensures the ethical and safe use of drone technology, adhering strictly to federal regulations and city policies.
Chief Edward Santiago expressed enthusiasm about the program, stating, "This new technology allows us to respond to emergencies faster, gain critical information before officers arrive on scene, and ultimately protect both the public and our officers more effectively."
This initiative reflects the city's commitment to innovation, transparency, and community safety, positioning Sunny Isles Beach at the forefront of modern policing.
